One of the fastest-growing regions in the Southwest, Tucson's business assets include a thriving economy, a strategic location serving as an economic gateway between nations, an energetic and educated workforce, and a creative, pro-business environment anchored by a world-class research university.

October 2009

  • Business Facilities recognized Tucson in its October 2009 cover story as one of its editors’ choices for cities that are surviving and thriving during the economic downturn. The article credits Tucson’s strong base in aerospace/defense manufacturing and solar energy as positioning the region for major growth and development in the future. “Editor’s Picks” were based on locations that drew their attention during the previous months for quick adjustment to the dramatically changing economic landscape.

August 2009

  • Business Facilities magazine has named Tucson No. 6 on its list of the top 10 metro areas for aerospace/defense manufacturing. The ranking is primarily based on a comparison of industry sector employment and wages. Also evaluated were major projects and facility expansion/relocation activity for a region in the past 12 months, and the number of major aerospace and defense contractors headquartered in the region.

June 2009

  • Tucson ranked No. 16 on a list of the best places to live and work for young professionals in cities with a population of more than 500,000. The ranking comes from Next Generation Consulting, which uses an index to evaluate a city on assets important to "next gen" workers: earning, learning, vitality, around town, after hours, cost of lifestyle and social capital. Tucson was the only Arizona city to make the list.

  • Charter school Basis Tucson ranks No. 5 and University High School ranks No. 21 on Newsweek's list of the top 100 high schools in the country.

May 2009

  • Fast Company magazine ranked Tucson as one of the top 12 "Fast Cities" in the world for its Healthy City Initiative and crime reduction efforts. www.fastcompany.com/cities/2009

January 2009

  • Men's Fitness magazine named Tucson the #13 fittest city in its annual ranking of the fittest and fattest cities.

November 2008

  • Tucson was ranked the 4th best "digital city" in the annual Digital Cities Survey.

September 2008

  • Tucson-based Paragon Space Development Corp. ranked ninth in a list of the top 50 engineering companies in the nation by Inc. magazine. The company, founded in 1993, was No. 1 under aerospace engineering. The aerospace engineering and technology development firm specializes in life support in extreme environments.

July 2008

  • Tucson Electric Power (TEP) was ranked among the top 10 “most solar integrated utilities” by the Solar Power Association. TEP earned recognition for both its company-owned installations and for the photovoltaic systems hundreds of customer have installed on their rooftops through the company’s SunShare program.

  • The "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) - the largest public research body in Spain - ranked the University of Arizona # 21 in the ranking of the top 4,000 universities of the world.

  • University Medical Center has ranked among the top 50 hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" for 2008. This year UMC was recognized in five of the 16 medical specialties the magazine surveyed: heart and heart surgery, respiratory disorders, geriatrics, kidney disease, and ear, nose and throat.

  • Family Circle magazine named Oro Valley one of its "10 Best Towns for Families," cited for its small-town atmosphere. The magazine article recognizes residents' volunteerism and the town's environmental efforts, including the use of low-voltage lighting, recycled carpets and non-toxic cleaning products in government buildings. The winners were selected based on criteria that included housing affordability, safety, quality of schools and commitment to the environment.
