Message from the President

Challenging economic conditions throughout the nation and the world have certainly had an effect on Tucson but our region’s economy continues to benefit from some extraordinary assets. And for us at TREO in 2012 (and beyond) we are laser focused to promote those assets.

Tucson and Phoenix (2 hours to the north) comprise a dynamic “megapolitan area” ~ a large region that delivers market value and a whole host of amenities to any company considering expanding or relocating to the region. We also benefit from 350 days of sun each year which makes this region a natural Sun Corridor – an attractive attribute to not just solar firms but also to any renewable energy enterprise.

Our region’s bioscience and aerospace & defense industry sectors remain strong and a dynamic partnership has developed among our universities and our private sector employers seeking top-notch talent. A skilled workforce is key to any region’s success and we are committed to developing and sustaining workforce excellence. In 2011 we saw a number of local firms announcing expansions and our region attracted new firms as well. The list includes Amonix, CyraCom, SunEdison, C3, B/E Aerospace, NRG, Bombardier, RMS, Graybar, Schletter, and Bruker.

TREO’s approach to economic development is based on our Economic Blueprint, a long-term, community-developed plan focused on five key tenets:

  • Attract high-skilled/high-wage jobs
  • Promote educational excellence
  • Support urban renaissance
  • Create a livable, diverse community
  • Encourage collaborative governance and stewardship

As we look forward to the year ahead we know that it will be filled with hard work. I’m optimistic that our hard work will yield additional successes for the Tucson region.
