The Town of Oro Valley was incorporated in 1974 with a population of 1,200 people over 2.6 square miles. Since then it has grown to have the second-largest population in Pima County with a Census 2000 population count of 29,700 people over 32.9 square miles. The town sits at an elevation of 2,620 feet, covers over 34 square miles, and has a current population of about 40,000 people.
The age structure of the population within the Town of Oro Valley suggests great workforce potential with 21.5% under the age of 18, 27.5% from 18 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years.
Located about six miles north of Tucson, Oro Valley serves as a gateway to State Highway 77 and Catalina State Park. The valley was formed by the Santa Cruz River joining Gold Creek in the Catalina Mountains. Featuring a community park, the Town of Oro Valley hosts several events for children and adults promoting arts education and awareness.
The Town of Oro Valley employs the council-manager form of municipal government. Oro Valley is administered by a seven-member town council. The council oversees all issues pertaining to Oro Valley, including residential and commercial development and preservation of natural areas.
Oro Valley residents elect six members of the town council. The mayor is directly elected while the vice mayor is selected by the council from among the six council members.
The economy of Oro Valley is fueled by the resort industry. Oro Valley features several top resorts and amenities. The town provides a number of golfing opportunities, including Oro Valley Country Club, Hilton El Conquistador Country Club, the Golf Club at Vistoso, the Stone Canyon Golf Club, and Sun City Vistoso Golf Club.
In addition, Oro Valley has an emerging base of biotechnology firms including medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and diagnostic firms, as well as a regional hospital.
Oro Valley is also home to representatives of the aerospace industry and a growing retail sector, with more than 2 million square feet of commercial/retail space in development as of 2006. In addition to the resorts, the other large employers include Canyon Del Oro High School, Amphitheater School District, Ventana Medical Systems, Inc., Sanofi-Aventis, Northwest Medical Center, Honeywell, and Securaplane.
The median income for a household in the town is $61,037, and the median income for a family is $67,563, the highest in the region. The per capita income for the town is $31,134.
