Quick Facts:
Tucson is one of the oldest towns in the United States.

Tucson served as capital of the Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877.

About 18 percent of the labor force of the Metropolitan area works in the Government sector.

Federal, state and local government employ more than 82,000 people.

Tucson is the seat of Pima County and has a Council-Manager form of government.

In the Tucson region, the federal government employment consists primarily of jobs at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and at the U.S. Border Patrol. The federal government also maintains a local presence with the federal courthouse and FBI. The growing presence of the federal government in Tucson supports the nation's national defense posture, homeland security strategy, and illegal immigration policies.

State government employment is dominated by The
University of Arizona. State administrative and educational functions account for much of the remaining employment in this sector. Over one-half of local government employment is related to education. Other local government employment is composed of law enforcement and administration.

Economic development is a regional effort and TREO's regional economic development partners are committed to this effort. All communities within Southern Arizona promote vitality within their unique area and value the regional collaboration that serves the needs of residents and promotes prosperity.
